On Sunday the 23rd of November the VGL Men’s and Mixed Foursomes were held at Churchill Waverly (Endeavour Hills) Golf Club. 122 players braved a wet start to the round before Ringwood broke their duck in Foursomes events winning both the Men’s and Mixed Gross events for the first time!
In the Men’s Foursomes it was an extraordinary finish with Ringwood pair Nicholas Walton and Leigh Biggerstaff three shots behind Waterford Valley’s two-time champions Bryce O’Byrne and Brett Salter starting the last. Leigh piped one down the middle on 18 before Nicholas holed out for an eagle to somehow win by a shot!

In the Mixed Foursomes it was a long wait for Ringwood’s husband and wife pairing of Grant and Jo Stack who teed off in the first group of the day and finished with 85. Close to two hours after they finished their round they were confirmed as the winners by a single shot from Sandringham’s defending champions Craig Brenner and Kate Caridakis.

It was a tight affair in the NETT event for the Men’s Foursomes. On the day Bernie Ross and Gary Curtis from Riverside Essendon were believed to have come out victorious with a Nett 73, only for it to be discovered the next day that the automatic maximum handicap (27.4) adjustment had not been correctly applied to their score, through no fault of theirs. After the correct handicap adjustments were carried out it was Gary Ridout and Clive Jordan from Glen Waverly with a Nett 74 who were half a shot in front of the Gross winners, Ringwood pair Nicholas Walton and Leigh Biggerstaff, and Forest Hill pair Bert Pearce and VGL President Peter Frost.

The Nett Mixed event was a similar story to the Men’s event where Normanby Park’s Michael Herewini and Dianne Giles were declared the winners after the round with a Nett 72, only for it to be discovered the next day that the Women’s maximum handicap (45) adjustment had not been correctly applied to their score, once again, through no fault of theirs. After the correct handicap adjustments were carried out it was VGL Men’s Captain George Weaver and his better half Robin from Centenary Park with a Nett 73 who won on a countback from Benjamin and Lorna Morrison from Normanby Park, becoming two-time champions of the Nett event in the process.
